When cleaning blood stains there is no replacement for a professional cleaning service, but there are many treatments until a permanent solution is available. For this reason it is essential to know how to spot treat a blood stain, to minimize its damage until John’s Chem-Dry of Whatcom County can give it the permanent solution it deserves.

Liberally Apply Cold Water

When dealing with blood stains it is important to always use cold water. While, many stains (vomit, dirt, etc.) require the application of luke warm water, it is very important not to use this method when dealing with blood. As a first step, get rid of any blood clots that are rooted in your carpet’s fibers. Second, take a cleaning cloth and soak it in cold water. Finally, apply the cloth to the stained area. Some older stains may require that you repeat the cold water treatment.

TechRugCreate “Bubbling Effect” with Hydrogen Peroxide

You may find that the blood still won’t budge after the first treatment. If this is the case apply a minor amount of hydrogen peroxide and dab it on the damaged area of your carpet. Eventually the hydrogen peroxide will produce a “bubbling effect.” After this happens, allow it to sit for a few minute and soak up the moisture with a dry rag.

Use Laundry Detergent

As a last resort, spray on laundry detergent. Massage the detergent into the stain with your finger. Make sure you don’t scrub the stain with another cleaning tool (like a sponge or rag), this may worsen the stain. After applying the detergent repeat the cold water treatment until all of the detergent and stain are gone.

Even after all of these steps it is possible that the stain may still remain. Don’t be afraid to call John’s Chem-Dry of Whatcom County, we know the ins and outs of carpet cleaning and no stain is too stubborn for us.
